Home » Essential Oils » 7 Amber Essential Oil Benefits and Uses – Nature’s Magical Perfume

Amber essential oil is a less well known oil which has a very unique scent – a blend of earthy smoky and woody aromas. Amber essential oil benefits have been used since ancient times for both medicine and as a perfume. In this post I will show you how you can use amber essential oil and what benefits it will bring.

amber essential oil benefits

Amber essential oil is made from tree resin. The solid resin is heated to 200 degrees Celsius until the amber resin starts to break down and yield an oil. The oil has been used as a natural perfume due to its warm, smoky scent, or in natural beauty treatments. It also has a number of positive effects on the mind and body.

In history it was believed amber had magical curative powers. It wasn’t only used as an oil, but the stone was worn as a bracelet to cure ills and slow ageing. Today we know the main reason Amber provides so many health benefits is its high content of succinic acid. Succinic Acid, also known as Amber Acid, is found in Baltic amber and is a natural antibiotic and powerful antioxidant.

In the world of essential oils, amber is unusual since it is derived from the hardened resin of ancient trees, unlike most essential oils which originate from leaves, flowers or wood. Other special oils that come from resins include Elemi, Mastic, Benzoin Resinoid, Frankincense and Myrrh.

How to Use Amber Essential Oil

Amber essential oil can be added to homemade candles or used in a diffuser or oil burner. If you want to use amber essential oil on your skin you should first ensure it is mixed in with a carrier oil. Amber mixes well with jojoba oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil. It is also commonly mixed in with other essential oils to form a massage oil. Some good essential oils that blend well with amber include sandalwood oils, and lavender essential oil.

Benefits of Amber Essential Oil

1. It Boosts the Immune System

Baltic Amber is believed to help boost the immune system. The succinic acid it contains has antibacterial properties, and when used in a diffuser it can help to eliminate respiratory infections. Other oils which are also excellent for supporting the immune system include frankincense and sandalwood which both help to stimulate the production of white blood cells.

2. Promotes Better Heart Health

In traditional Chinese medicine amber oil is used to promote heart health and blood circulation. It is usually combined with ginseng and notoginseng and given to patients with cardiovascular disease. Amber oil is also frequently used in Oriental Medicine in massage oil as it is effective in stimulating blood flow.

The succinic acid in Baltic Amber is believed to prevent disruptions of the heart rhythm. Its use can be traced back to the 17th century when amber oil was recommended along with rose oil to strengthen the heart.

3. It Can be Used as a Natural Perfume

Amber oil has been used as a natural perfume for thousands of years. It is almost always found in a blended scent with other oils such as cedarwood and vanilla.  Amber doesn’t have a very strong scent unless it’s burned when it then gives off a pine-like aroma. When combined in natural perfumes it usually has a woody, earthy scent.

The actress Kristen Bell wore amber oil as perfume to the Emmy Awards in 2016. She admitted whilst on the red carpet she was wearing amber oil on her wrist instead of a typical perfume.

4. Reduces Skin Inflammation

When mixed with a carrier oil and applied topically, amber oil can help to reduce skin inflammation caused by acne, dry skin conditions or sun burn. You can add a few drops to your regular moisturiser or to your facial steamer to help calm any redness.

5. It Has a Calming Effect on the Mind

Amber scent can have a psychoactive effect and alter brain waves to make you feel calmer. If you want to use amber to reduce stress of anxiety you can use this in your bath by adding a few drops to the hot water. You can also mix amber oil with lavender in your diffuser to help calm the nervous system. This combination effects the limbic system and helps with meditating and promoting feelings of serenity and calm.

6. It Helps to Relieve Pain

The succinic acid in amber has analgesic properties, and it is believed that when the oil (or fossilized resin) is put against the skin, succinic acid is released into the body reducing pain and inflammation. This is why amber teething necklaces are made for babies.

7. It Works as an Air Freshener

As well as having health and beauty benefits for the human body, amber oil can also be used to hide unpleasant odors. The scent of amber oil is often added to air fresheners along with other woody scents and exotic spices.

Popular Amber Essential Oil Blends

When used in aromatherapy, amber is usually mixed in with other essential oils rather than used alone. Popular amber essential oil blends include amber and sandalwood, or amber and frankincense.

I often buy the essential oils by Gya Labs as they make high quality essential oils however they currently don’t have amber oil. Amber oil is quite a difficult oil to get hold of but HealthAid and Aphrosmile have both made a good quality oils which work well in an essential oil diffuser. If you want to try one of my suggested amber oil mixes I have linked to my recommended oils below.

Wearing amber next to your skin can have some of the same benefits as usually the essential oil. This is because the heat from your body causes succinic acid to be released from the stone and be absorbed into your body. I have recommended some good amber stone necklaces below.

Precautions

You should be careful with essential oil safety as they are very potent and could cause skin irritation if they are not diluted or used properly. Pregnant women should consult a Doctor before using violet oil, since there is not enough reliable information about its safety in these cases.  The same precaution should be taken when used in children.
